Cancer Agency Awarded Exemplary Accreditation

Saskatchewan residents can be sure to receive high‐quality care and support from the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (Cancer Agency). The Cancer Agency received its first Exemplary Standing for safety and quality from Accreditation Canada. This is the highest achievement a health care organization can receive.

Every four years the Cancer Agency, like many healthcare organizations, undergoes an Accreditation Canada survey visit, which assesses compliance with national standards for patient care. Surveyors evaluated the Cancer Agency on Governance, Leadership, Cancer Care, Medication Management, Infection Prevention and Control, Population Health & Wellness and Perioperative Services/Invasive Procedures. Over two weeks, assessments took place both virtually and on‐site in Regina and Saskatoon.

“This is a significant accomplishment for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, an organization which continues to provide high‐quality care and treatment for cancer patients in Saskatchewan,” said Health Minister Paul Merriman.

“Clients indicated they receive superb care from compassionate, caring staff. The clients and families stated they are heard and they have a voice. They are intimately involved in the decision‐making process and there are extensive resources available to support clients and families,” surveyor comments.

“To receive Exemplary Standing during the COVID‐19 pandemic displays the level of commitment to excellence our teams take when it comes to cancer care delivery in Saskatchewan,” said Dr. Jon Tonita, President and CEO of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. “Accreditation provides one more way we can let patients, families and clients know that they are our priority, and they will receive a high‐level of care.”

Accreditation took place virtually in April and on‐site in November in Regina and Saskatoon. The next accreditation survey visit for the Agency will be in 2024.
