Major Renovations Complete at the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge

The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency is pleased to announce the completion of a major renewal project at the Cancer Patient Lodge in Regina, improving comfort, accessibility and care for out-of-town patients receiving treatment in the city.

“We are excited to offer new and improved accommodations to patients and their families who need to travel to Regina for appointments and to receive treatment,” said Denise Budz, Vice President, Care Services, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. “Our patients deserve access to safe, comfortable, and supportive accommodations throughout their cancer journey.”

The major renovations were possible thanks to the Cancer Agency’s fundraising partner, the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan, which raised more than $1.72 million for the renovations.

“We are proud to support improvements to a place that is so much more than a building—it’s a true home away from home for cancer patients, their families and caregivers,” said Nora Yeates, CEO, Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan. “We want to thank all those individuals and organizations that have donated generously to help modernize the lodge’s infrastructure, enhance accessibility and improve overall patient comfort.”

The Regina Cancer Patient Lodge was originally built and opened in 1985 with support from the Canadian Cancer Society and provides affordable accommodations for out-of-town patients receiving cancer care at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre. Guests can stay at the lodge for a fee of $40 per person per night. This includes accommodation, meals and snacks. Each year, the lodge serves more than 500 patients and their families from across the province, offering a supportive environment close to crucial cancer services.

“Not only is the Lodge a safe and welcoming home away from home, it’s also a place of community where patients can share their experience with others who are going through something similar,” said Tiffany Hymers, Regina Cancer Patient Lodge Manager. “The strength we see in our guests, and the strength that our guests see and hear in each other’s stories is truly uplifting. We are so grateful to be able to offer this service to the amazing people of Saskatchewan”.

All 18 rooms have been fully renovated and now include new beds, bedding, furniture, artwork, cable TV, vinyl flooring, window shades and blackout blinds, lighting and keycard access. Updates were also made to the private washroom in each room so that each guest will now have a walk-in shower with a built-in shower bench or bathtub option, which improves accessibility and patient safety. The lodge also now has a guest room option that is completely barrier free.

With the addition of several queen beds in the facility, the lodge can now accommodate 32 guests, up from 28 guests before the renovations. The addition of queen beds means that patients can now sleep comfortably next to their spouse or loved one.

Some other key renovations, include an updated and barrier-free reception area; upgrades to the kitchen, dining room, TV lounge areas and games room; a new elevator; a new roof and new heating and cooling systems.

The Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan will be adding a donor wall in the dining room in the next few months to showcase the generous donors who contributed to this major renovation project.

A patient lodge is also available in Saskatoon at a temporary location for those patients who are receiving treatment at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre (SCC). A capital project is currently underway to build a new, modern facility on the original lodge site at 1036 College Drive, keeping the facility close to the Royal University Hospital and SCC.
